The Land and Environment Court of Appeal has granted a permit for LKAB to mine in Mertainen.

The court has ruled that LKAB's application is in compliance with strict environmental requirements. The permit concerns mining and processing of 15 million tonnes of iron ore per year in Mertainen. The court has not issued an enforcement order, which means that LKAB must wait until the ruling gains legal force. Thereafter, preparations for mine development and recruitment of the necessary mine personnel may commence.

Facts:

LKAB is implementing an extensive growth programme to open three new mines in the Svappavaara Field, just south of Kiruna. This is Europe's largest iron ore project and it will increase LKAB's annual production by 35 percent to 37 million tonnes of iron ore products. The total investment amounts to 10 billion Swedish kronor and will create 700 new jobs.
