LKAB is now ready to begin mining in Mertainen.
– The Mertainen mine is a vital cornerstone for strengthening LKAB's competitiveness. This multi-billion-krona project is not only crucial for our growth programme, but also for the entire region, says Lars-Eric Aaro, LKAB's President and CEO.
– We are very pleased that events have taken a turn for the better and we can now move ahead with the company's plans for expansion. This notification also means that we can start the process of recruiting personnel for the many new jobs that have been created, commented Per-Erik Lindvall, Senior Vice President, Technology and Business Development.
The planned Mertainen mine will enable continued growth and an overall production increase of 35 percent. Investment in the three open-pit mines amounts to about 10 billion kronor. The entire project will mean 500-700 new jobs in the Svappavaara field, which is Europe's largest iron ore project.
