Force Majeure due to major strike in Norway

Due to circumstances beyond our control arising from a major strike in Norway, LKAB is forced to declare Force Majeure.

Due to circumstances beyond our control arising from a major strike in Norway, LKAB is forced to declare Force Majeure.

On May 24, 2012, approx. 25,000-30,000 public sector employees went on strike in Norway. The strike involves three of four main unions in Norway (LO, YS and Unio) and the reason for the dispute is that public sector employees are not satisfied with the response to their salary claims in the on-going negotiation with the Norwegian government.

Unfortunately, the strike affects personnel at the Norwegian National Rail Administration and as a consequence, the railway traffic on Ofotbanen between Narvik and Kiruna stopped completely on May 24 at 06.00. There has not been any progress for an agreement during the last days and our stock in Narvik is now running short. We have no information on for how long the strike may continue, but we will notify to all concerned as soon as this Force Majeure event has come to an end.

LKAB regrets this miserable situation and our Marketing Division will contact our customers shortly to discuss the management of deliveries.
