LKAB is an international and high-tech mining and minerals group that mines and upgrades the unique magnetite ores of northern Sweden for the global steel market. Sustainability is the core of our business, and our ambition is to be one of the industry's most innovative, resource-efficient and responsible companies. The group, which had a turnover of close to 26 billion SEK in 2018 and employs about 4 200 people in 13 countries, also includes industrial minerals, drilling systems, rail transport, shotcrete and explosives manufacturing, mining related services and property management.
LKAB is developing one of the major exploration campaigns in Europe to expand the life of their business beyond 2050. The main focus is the continuation at depth of our current orebodies. This means moving towards 1500m below surface and beyond. The challenges associated with greater depths require an extremely good knowledge and characterization of the rock mass prior to any mine design.
About the position
We are now looking for experienced rock mechanic engineers and geologists to accurately characterize our rockmass and continue to enhance our geotechnical block model. Your main tasks will be:
- Establishing a common criteria with the rock engineering and the exploration departments for geotechnical corelogging and interpretation.
- Geotechnical Corelogging simultaneously with the ore resource geologists
- Introducing the data into Leapfrog and review the previously introduced data
- Creating the geotechnical block model for both the orebody and waste rock
- Ensure all tests are adequately done and standardized
You must have at least two years of relevant experience in geotechnical mapping and corelogging. The relevant experience must also be current and, where practical, continuous within the industry.
You have strong integrity, adhere to code of ethics, have a well-developed ability to cooperate and to communicate with other people, and an interest in and experience from leadership. You are systematic, structured and self-propelled. You express yourself well in written and spoken English and/or Swedish. The position of RockMechanic engineer or geologist belongs to the Mining Technology Department, and will report directly to the section manger. You will be based in Kiruna or Gällivare, close to the mines. Travel within mines will be part of the job.
