Roger Hahne carries a sense of confidence with him when he travels to meet LKAB's customers in the Middle East and North Africa. That confidence is based on the knowledge of our research and development and of our products that he has acquired over what will soon be 20 years at LKAB. Roger has worked as everything from a research engineer to a processing manager in Kiruna.
What are you involved in today?
"I am responsible for the sale of pellets to customers in the Middle East and North Africa. That basically involves agreeing prices and delivery volumes. The other part of my job is as product manager for DR pellets, or direct reduction pellets, which we mainly sell to the Middle East and North Africa. A lot of my work involves hearing what customers have to say. I listen to what they think about our products by visiting them on site and following up on deliveries. We may need to made adaptations to make the product better.
Together with our research and production, we start a technical customer collaboration to solve the issue."
What drives you?
"I like working with people, creating teams and working with others in teams. I am curious about people and new cultures. Despite all the different cultures, we humans are actually quite alike. That's exciting."
What's the best thing about your job?
"I have a very varied job and it's never boring. No two days are alike. That suits my personality."
What are the challenges of your role and how do you handle them?
"Having enough time for everything. There is a lot going on and I travel a lot. But I manage to achieve a good work-life balance. Another challenge involves changes, both in the market and among customers. You have to know what these mean for us and how we should deal with them. When key people stop working for a customer, I have to build up a new relationship with a new person."
Why do you work at LKAB?
"Because it's a fantastic company offering a variety of different opportunities. As an engineer, you can work in many different areas. From research, production and projects to marketing. LKAB is a large company, and yet still a small company. What happens around the world affects us, and we operate on the global market."
What energises you?
"New things. I often ask why we are doing something. Where is this taking us? Is it taking us forward? Innovative thinking is important, and I like to challenge people."
