As part of the HYBRIT initiative, the bio-oil plant in Malmberget was inaugurated during the maintenance stop in May 2020.
One of LKAB's challenges and contributions in HYBRIT is to develop fossil-fuel-free pellets, which demands a change in the heating technology used in the process. The aim of the ongoing full-scale trials in the bio-oil plant is to replace fossil oil with renewable bio-oil in one of LKAB's existing pellet plants. By using biofuel as a heat source in the straight-grate plant the fossil-fuel carbon dioxide emissions from operations in Malmberget will be reduced by 40 percent, which corresponds to about 60,000 tonnes per year, already during the test period, which will continue until 2021.
To begin with, the bio-oil plant will be used as a test facility, but the system is dimensioned to run the entire straight-grate plant in Malmberget on 100% bio-oil.
