LKAB Wassara AB

Drilling technology is one of LKAB’s most important innovations for streamlining the extraction process in the company’s underground mines.

Thanks to the water-powered drilling rigs developed by the LKAB subsidiary LKAB Wassara, the company is able to precision drill fans up to 55 metres deep. This means that each fan provides just over eight times as much iron ore as its counterpart did 25 years ago.

Every year LKAB drills holes totalling more than a million metres in the Kiruna mine alone, which is more than any other iron ore producer in the world.

LKAB Wassara also supplies complete drilling systems for a number of other applications in the mining and processing industries:

  • Service and hole backfilling
  • Predrilling for injection in dams
  • Micropiling
  • Geothermal energy layer drilling
